Creating the Sountrack for Paramount’s Chopper Cops

Behind the Scenes: Mixing the Action-Packed Audio for Chopper Cops | Nicole Pfledderer

In Chopper Cops, audio mixing plays a crucial role in balancing high-octane action with clear, intelligible dialogue. Audio mixer Nicole Pfledderer shares the unique challenges of blending diverse sound sources—from rough body cam footage to helicopter headsets and police radios—into a cohesive, immersive experience. Key challenges included taming distorted police radios, cleaning up interview audio recorded in varied environments, and creating dynamic action scenes that kept the energy high without overwhelming the dialogue. Using tools like de-essers and custom EQ treatments, Pfledderer crafted a soundscape that was both thrilling and broadcast-ready. The result? A dynamic, cinematic mix that pulls viewers into the heart-pounding action of Chopper Cops while ensuring clarity and focus.

The Victory+ Graphics Package sound design

Sound Designing the Graphics Package for Victory+ Sports Network

We had the exciting opportunity to design the sound for the new Victory+ sports network’s graphics package. The process involved multiple revisions and a deep focus on creating a cohesive, polished sound. The visuals featured metallic elements sliding and locking together, so I crafted a distinctive metallic lockdown sound to tie it all together. To complement the movement, I added glassy slides and synthetic clicks for added detail and polish.

However, during the client review, they requested the removal of the metal lockdown sound. After testing this change, we discovered that the design felt cleaner and slicker without it. To enhance the remaining elements, I introduced more low-end and delay processing, resulting in a refined package that perfectly complemented the custom music we composed for the network. Now the graphics package is live and circulating—check it out!

The plan comes together for “A Simple Man”

The Sound Design Behind Steve Treviño’s Simple Man Special

For Steve Treviño’s Simple Man special on Netflix, the sound design came together seamlessly. Filmed at the Tobin Center in San Antonio, sound engineer John McKallip used a strategic mic setup, including an MS mic, crowd mics, and a balcony mic, to capture the venue’s full atmosphere. Editor Rick Cikowski ensured all audio tracks were preserved, making the mixing process easier. Mixer Roy Machado then carefully time-aligned the tracks and resolved sync issues, creating a natural, immersive sound. The result? A polished 5.1 mix that helped Simple Man soar to #2 on Netflix’s rankings.
